ARTIST STATEMENT
Growing up, I always enjoyed creative writing, but I also have a heart for social issues. These two passions are quite intertwined for me. As a result, I often say my poetry emphasizes self-awareness as a means to social awareness. In 2021, I was honored to be shortlisted for the Anita McAndrews Poets for Human Rights Award, organized by Poets Without Borders. And, because social issues are important to me, proceeds from my eBooks Our Neighbors’ Keepers (2022) and Silhouettes (2019) are donated to philanthropic endeavors at home and abroad.
In recent years, I’ve enjoyed connecting with the international community of creatives through online forums and social media. Two of my books were created in collaboration with Scottish Illustrator and Publisher, Jane Cornwell, following an ekphrastics challenge hosted by fellow poet Paul Brookes, of The Wombwell Rainbow. My most recent collection, Dismantling Mountains, was published by Vellum Publishing UK, an indie press with a socially conscious catalog. Dismantling Mountains, like my other books, uses a variety of poetic forms.
Being self-taught, experimenting with form comes naturally to me. My book Things Worth Repeating? (2022) is written in a form I refer to as a contrapuntal trinitas - a sort of free verse/Zuihitsu hybrid that can be read three ways. The idea came to me after reading many poems which utilize caesura (line breaks or pauses) and/or white space, whereby I was bothered that the sets of phrases on one side of the page or the other, couldn’t stand alone or make sense apart from those on the opposite side. So I set to work on my own previously published poems and, hence the name, Things Worth Repeating? was born.
Meanwhile, I am always interested in connecting with fellow writers and poetry lovers from around the globe! For more information, please feel free to contact me through one of the avenues on my website's "Connect" tab. Thank you very much for your interest in my poetry.
