ARTIST STATEMENT
Growing up, I always enjoyed creative writing, but I also have a heart for social issues. As a result, my poetry often emphasizes self-awareness as a means to social awareness, with a global perspective.
Through the years, I’ve enjoyed connecting with the international writing community, many of whom are highlighted on my Featured Poets Series. In 2021, my poem “Just Justice” was shortlisted for the Anita McAndrews Poets For Human Rights Award by Poets Without Borders. Two of my books have been created in collaboration with the talented Scottish Illustrator and Publisher, Jane Cornwell. And, my collection Dismantling Mountains (2023) was published by Vellum Publishing (Manchester, England), an indie press with a socially conscious catalog.
Dismantling Mountains, like my other books, uses a variety of poetic forms. Being self-taught, experimenting with form comes naturally to me. My book Things Worth Repeating? is written in a form I’ve dubbed a contrapuntal trinitas, as it uses flexible stanzas and can be read three ways. The idea came to me after reading many poems which utilize caesura (line breaks or pauses) and/or white space, whereby I was bothered that the sets of phrases on one side of the page or the other, couldn’t stand alone or make sense apart from those on the opposite side. So I set to work using phrases from my own previously published poems and, hence the name, Things Worth Repeating? was born.
Currently, I have several new projects in the works, and meanwhile, my family and I continue to support human rights issues at home and abroad. (Proceeds from my eBooks Our Neighbors’ Keepers (2022) and Silhouettes (2019) are donated to philanthropic endeavors.) Thank you for your interest in my writing. More information is always available on my website: www.SamanthaTerrell.com.
